Breaking: Mayor Louie Trujillo resigns (3)

Louie Trujillo has resigned as the Mayor of Las Vegas, effective immediately, he confirmed to the Optic Tuesday.

David Romero, who had been the Ward 4 City Councilor and Mayor Pro-Tem, will be acting mayor until a special election takes place to determine a successor.

In his resignation letter, Trujillo said, “Effective immediately, I resign my position as Mayor of the City of Las Vegas in consideration of my physical, mental and spiritual well being. I thank the beautiful people of Las Vegas for entrusting me with the office of the Mayor.”

Trujillo was elected Mayor in March 2020. His term was to run through November 2025, when the next city election was scheduled. Originally, it was to run through March 2024, but in June 2022, the city opted into the “Local Election Act,” which extended the terms of elected officials to get in line with the rest of the state.

The ordinance read, “Any municipality may by ordinance opt-in to the Local Election Act and file the ordinance with the Secretary of State by Jan. 30 of each odd numbered year (Section 1-22-3.1). By opting-in the County Clerk will run the City’s Municipal Elections. The Regular Municipal elections will be held on odd numbered years in November with the elected officials taking office on Jan. 1.”

Since the mayor’s term was extended until more than a year from now, the position must be filled by a special election, according to the city’s charter. Until that election is held, the city’s governing body will be made up of three councilors (David Ulibarri, Michael Montoya and Barbara Casey) and the acting Mayor, Romero, who will not have voting power since a tie vote is not possible.

Trujillo experienced a significant amount of turmoil during his time as mayor, seeing all of his original appointees for city manager, city attorney and police chief leave the city early, forcing him to name multiple replacements.

His most recent police chief appointee, Antonio Salazar, is currently on paid leave after the police visited his home due to a domestic disturbance last month, His status with the city is currently up in the air.

His original city manager William Taylor resigned in June 2021, and was replaced by Leo Maestas, who has been in the position since then. Maestas’s position was to be discussed by the city council at Wednesday’s meeting in executive session, according to the agenda posted to the city’s website.

It is not yet known when the special election will be held for the city, or who will run for the position when it is determined. The Optic reached out to the City Clerk’s office for clarification on when the election will be held, but did not immediately hear back.

Trujillo becomes the city’s second consecutive mayor to resign prior to the end of their first term. The city’s last mayor, Tonita Gurule-Giron, resigned after charges were filed against her for misuse of funds and abuse of power by the Attorney General’s Office. She resigned with just two months left in her first term. Then-councilor Vincent Howell served as acting mayor for the short time left in her term, and a special election was not required.

This situation is developing, and more details will be released when they are made available.

Sorry to see another public official resign from the City of Las Vegas government....what's going on? The City government seems to be cursed...they can't seem to get honest people who don't commit crimes or are involved in unscrupulous behavior to hold elected or appointed positions. I personally think there is too much nepotism in this town...everybody is related to somebody else in some way, and the city elects relatives who really don't have the qualifications for the office. We need new blood...preferably not related to a majority of the residents here....and they need to know how to be a manager...and manage...money & people, and be able to plan ahead and deal with any unforseen crisis...the need, more than anything else, start working for the people and make life here...better...
