correspondent terry moran is at the courthouse in wilmington, delaware, for us. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the trial of hunter biden was unprecedented. no child of a sitting president had ever gone on trial before. the media coverage spanned the globe. but inside that courtroom, the judge, the jurors, for the lawyers, it felt like just an ordinary criminal trial that ended in that historic verdict. this morning president biden is standing by his only surviving son hunter after his historic conviction on three felony gun charges. in this moment, with this embrace, the president sent a signal just hours after a jury of 12 found his son guilty of illegally purchasing a firearm. after three hours of deliberations that stunning moment in the courtroom. hunter biden first appeared shocked when he heard the word guilty, then slowly nodded, patted his lawyer on the back and hugged his legal team and wife. his lawyer argued to jurors that hunter biden was not actively using drugs when he filled out this federal form to purchase

their decision. >> it's unfortunate that he's convicted, but him being the son is not what i'm thinking. i'm thinking that he did a bad thing and actions have consequences. >> reporter: within minutes of the verdict, president biden issued a statement writing, i am the president but i'm also a dad. jill and i love our son and we are so proud of the man he is today. so many families who have had loved ones battle addiction understand the feeling of pride seeing someone you love come out the other side and be so strong and resilient in recovery. the president has said he will not pardon his son and will respect the judicial process as hunter now weighs an appeal. the process was set in motion by special counsel david weiss, the former u.s. attorney for delaware appointed by donald trump who biden kept in place to continue the federal probe of his own son. >> no one in this country is above the law. everyone must be accountable for their actions, even this defendant.

7:06 am

>> reporter: in his own statement, hunter biden wrote that he's more grateful today for the love and support from his loved ones than i am disappointed by the outcome. and he added recovery is possible by the grace of god and i am blessed to experience that gift one day at a time. what's next for hunter biden? well, first he'll meet with federal probation officials who will file presentencing report with the judge. prosecutors, defense lawyers will make their recommendations. experts say he is unlikely to face a prison term, but these are serious charges and prosecutors may ask for that. the judge said she'll sentence him in about four months, just before the election. george? >> george: thank you very much. let's bring in dan abrams, rachel scott at the white house. you just heard terry say prison time unlikely. do you agree? >> i do. i think prison time is unlikely. it will be interesting to see what the special counsel asks for. what does david weiss request? does he request prison time?

7:07 am

doesn't he? if you listened carefully to the press conference he had yesterday, it sounded like he was setting the stage for at least asking for a much lower sentence than the possible maximum here. >> george: has anyone ever gone to prison for this crime? >> no, but also no one has ever been charged in this context, right? in the fact that it was just one gun used. the gun wasn't used in a crime. there were no other crimes charged. all of those factors, which were factors in terms of deciding should the case have been brought? the jury wasn't allowed to consider those things but the judge can in the context of sentencing. it's a reminder that despite the that we question this person's background, can this person be fair? it's about hunter biden. in the end these jurors just went about doing their job. they were given very specific legal instructions. and they were kind of boxed in, in the sense of what the options were. it was pretty clear, based on

7:42 am

the first is inflation, which has been high, but is holding steady. second is the federal reserve's decision about whether they will cut interest rates. interest rates are 5.25% to 5.5%. there are likely no cuts coming today. what does this mean for your money? the average apr is near a record high about 21% with rates unlikely to come down today, that means they are likely to stay high those apr's. in real terms, say you are carrying a $1,000 balance making just the minimum payments on that card. at these rates it will cost you $2125 to pay it off. so if you are thinking about consolidating loans to lower your rate you have two good options here. if you have a credit score above 690 consider a 0% interest balance transfer credit card. you will roll everything to one spot but you have to make sure you pay it all down during the promotional period. that's usually during a little more than a year. if you have a lower credit score, you probably won't qualify for those credit cards.

7:43 am

if you've got a credit score below 690 you want to get a fixed rate debt consolidation loan through your credit union. those are less expensive generally. they come in lump sums ranging from $1,000 to $50,000 with terms up to seven years. then you just have to pay it all back, george. >> george: lot of interest in buy now pay later. any impact? >> rebecca: so right now buy now pay later is not really impacted by interest rate changes. rates are high, but many are now turning to buy pow pay later as an option. you've probably seen this at checkout online the option to pay in four is often there. you spread out the cost over time. you want to make sure if you are using buy now pay later loans, you are able to pay these loans on time. you want to make sure you have the money ready to go. check the finer prints, the details. sometimes, just sometimes, michael, they do charge you interest.

7:44 am

>> michael: what can people do right now to make sure these current interest rates work in their favor? >> rebecca: this is the thing best about high interest rates, michael. if you are keeping your money in a bank you want to make the most of that. these higher rates can be a great way to earn extra money on those savings risk-free as long as you're stashing those in a high rate savings account that's an fdic insured bank. you want to see if you've been earning apr over 5%. say you've got $1,000 in your high yield savings account. after one year you earned $51 on that year. if you keep it there five years you'll have an additional $284. the caveat is that in a high yield savings account, apy can fluctuate. that's a very big difference from a typical savings account where you're basically getting nothing on it. this is all risk free, so just do it. >> michael: i like that. >> robin: rebecca said it. >> george: coming up later the warning from one woman who fell into quicksand on the beach.
