a packed liberty airport, a newark liberty airport. behind me this line at spirit airlines has been steady throughout the morning. tsa expecting to screen 32 million people between thursday of this past week and july 8th. they say yesterday was the busiest travel day ever, not of the year, ever. and if you're going to be one of those folks traveling there are some things you can do. we want to give you some tips from the airlines. american airlines recommends arriving two hours early for your flight, reserving parking at the airport ahead of time will help and travel with a carry-on if you can, instead of checked bags, will save you time and some money. delta says it expects nearly 6 million customers through next week alone, an increase of 6% from 2023. if you're driving, a lot of people on the roads, as well. more than 60 million americans will be traveling by car. worst time to travel between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. best time is always in the morning before 10:00 a.m.

overall drivers will be paying a bit less to fill up. so that's some good news. the national average for a gallon of gasoline is about $3.50. roughly 5 cents less than this time last year. california is still the highest price for a gallon, about $4.80. all of these travel numbers that i say are up from last year, they are way up from prepandemic and, gio, i just spoke to 7-year-old paige gibson. curly hair, big smile. she reported that she does not like getting up in the morning. she does not like big crowds, but it's all worth it because she's going to florida with her grandmother to sit by a pool. >> gio: that's the right attitude. >> reporter: with a big smile on her face. >> gio: i bet she did. phil, thank you so much. from you let's go to somara because we're looking at the weather. somara, what will the weather be like? >> somara: for those on the east coast stormy. why started to see -- look at that. like a tornado materialized

there. this is jacksonville, florida. that actually ranked as an ef-1 tornado hitting 100-mile-per-hour winds. here's the storms revving up. today, pittsburgh, i-80 headed towards dubois, that will cross i-81. tomorrow afternoon between about 3:00 and 6:00 we'll see robust storms forming along the corridor. saturday, a few tornados, flash flooding and on sunday, damaging hail, wind and heavy rain or nose on the east coast. that's a look at the forecast across the country. janai, back to you. >> janai: thank you, somara. now to the race for the white house and the shock waves after the first presidential debate of 2024. some even calling for president biden to step aside and leave the race. our white house correspondent maryalice parks is back with this. break it down for us again, maryalice. >> yeah, janai, president biden overnight was hoping to reassure supporters after that poor debate performance. he insisted talking to donors that he can do this job, that he can still win and said he wouldn't be running if he didn't believe that the stakes were too high. it was interesting. in a new move biden acknowledged he has aged. he says i don't speak as

smoothly as i used to. i don't debate as well as i used to but like millions of americans when you get knocked down you get back up. now biden's shaky debate performance, like you said, was absolutely a political earthquake. democrats had just been hoping he'd be able to bring the fight to trump. "the new york times" editorial overnight called for him to step aside. they called former president donald trump a fundamental threat to democracy but wrote biden struggled and once he even struggled to reach the end of a sentence. more than once, i should say he struggled to reach the end of a sentence. we have seen in the last two days, guys, top democrats including hillary clinton, president obama, house leader hakeem jeffries rushing out to publicly support biden, but we don't know yet. we'll know in the next few days whether that's enough to calm these calls for him to step aside. >> janai: publicly. >> gio: publicly, and we will

>> whit: we are back now with our "gma" cover story, the hit "inside out 2" already hitting $1 billion. >> janai: wow. >> whit: at the box office. a huge hit. sparking conversations at home about how we can talk to our kids about their changing emotions as they grow. pediatrician dr. edith bracho-sanchez is joining us to help us out. doctor, welcome. thank you for being here. i have a middle school daughter right now so we're deep in all the new feelings. we saw "inside out 2" earlier this week. the introduction of anxiety into the picture and envy, of course. but how do we have these conversations with our kids about these new emotions entering the picture? >> i love the way this movie handled it. you can tell they consulted with some really smart people in the way they framed the story but what i would say is first recognize anxiety and envy and all those other new emotions are real. there are so many reasons why teens may be feeling anxious these days. this thing we all have by our side. we all used to come home and be

off. kids and teens don't get to just be off when they come home. the first thing is to name it. recognize it's real and understand its role. a little bit of anxiety is a good thing. it can keep us sharp. it can help us perform. the problem is when anxiety runs wild and uncontrolled and it's not balanced out by joy and then reasons -- or the way this might present in your child may be being on edge, being tense. difficulty with relaxing, then at some point difficulty with sleep, right, and headaches. unexplained pains. if any of this is happening definitely seek professional help. >> whit: all of that is happening. [ laughter ] >> janai: we were saying earlier -- >> whit: i'll talk with you later. >> janai: the difference of having a phone versus when you grew up, you could end up and didn't know when you were missing out on things so kids can challenge their parents in these years. how can they be authoritative yet compassionate with kids

going through all these emotions? >> and i love that you ask that because you're trying to balance it out. so the first thing that i would encourage everyone to remember when they have teens at home and tweens is that you remain your child's most trusted source of information and guidance and what we're going for is balanced parenting or lighthouse parenting. we want to be a stable force that kids can measure themselves against, and then we want to be looking out. imagine this lighthouse, right. we want to look down at the rocks making sure our kids are not going to crash and at the same time we're looking out at the waves of life knowing that they're going to learn to ride them because we're going to teach them and be there for them. >> whit: i love that. >> gio: you know, this is not a spoiler because it's right there in the trailer but that puberty button in the control room on "inside out." how do you even begin to have these conversations around that? >> yeah, gio, and it's not just one conversation, this is a series of conversations and it looks different in every household and it is okay to state our family values. we want to start these conversations early.

so what you do -- you can see this is what it looks like when you get it at the craft place and comes with this top on it and use an exacto knife to cut around and it will have filler and you're left with your "u." you put some parchment paper in the inside which you kind of hide by filling it and if you are using something like raspberries you could use a bowl on the inside or olives that will protect it. step and repeat and fill with red, white, and blue and let me tell you the "a" goes first. sometimes you cannot find an "a." if you can't find an "a," i've done the legwork for you. get a "v" and use the excess to create the "a." >> janai: a good hack because a, b, c probably goes first. beverages and, all right, let's stop, collaborate and listen. we're talking about ice, ice baby. >> i got that one. >> janai: someone set me up. >> so, yes, this is a real good example of how to save money and get bang for your buck with items not just festive for the

"gma." our series out loud and the pride run in full swing in central park happening right now. will ganss in the mix at the finish line. what's going on, will? >> reporter: oh, you guys, this is my new favorite morning of the year. i'm here with j solle, race director of the pride run this year. >> tell me why it's important for new york roadrunners to be here this year and poor the folks at home, why does this matter? >> well, it is amazing to be here at the largest pride charity run in the world. kicking off new york city pride weekend. this race started in 1982 with just 440 runners and here we are now today with over 8,000 people running this race. celebrating pride, authenticity and joy. it is so special for us, but at the same time, even more importantly, this is a charity

run. we're raising funds for the audrey lord project, a community organizing center for queer and transpeople of color in new york city. we couldn't be happier to be doing it. >> we couldn't be happier spotlighting it. you won the nonbinary category last year. what's it like to be on the other side of the finish line this year cheering on the runners? >> i got to crush the tape last year and crossed in first place and this year i got to hold the tape and cheer on our top finishers. it is such a joy to be able to give back and bring joy and just pride to all of the people running this race. i couldn't be happier about it. >> not to blow up your spot but i saw you getting a little bit emotional. it's also huge for the running community across the world. tokyo just added a nonbinary category to their marathon. what does it mean for runners all around the globe? >> to be able to run in a nonbinary category for me is such a show of authenticity. you know, the new york city marathon was the first major marathon to do it and now with tokyo announcing this week, just in time for pride, i might add that they'll have a nonbinary category means that nonbinary folks like myself can chase the six stars and do it authentically, something that i am now so excited to be able to do.

>> gio: all right. i am so excited about this segment here because our next guest is a former nasa astronaut and retired u.s. air force colonel who has been on three missions to space and now she's here to talk about her new book. it's just fantastic. it's called "sharing space." my friend and abc news contributor cady coleman. good morning. >> so nice to be here. >> gio: i'm so proud of you, first of all. this book is so fantastic and i love that you talk about missions, but not just in the way you think about it with space. tell me about that. >> well, i think, you know, it's easy to think a person on one of these patches is on a mission and there we are up on the space station, the six of us. and really, being up there, understanding that if i didn't do my job or help my crew to do their jobs, the mission wouldn't get done made me understand that we all have missions down here on earth and i wrote this book

to share the magic of space, but also the fact that whether it's in your home or your community, at your job, you're there for a reason. you exist for a reason. you know what it is and i've collected some things that really helped me accomplish missions. >> gio: and you have such a beautiful perspective in the way that you look at life, in the way that you look at our planet. but it's also so cool because you also spent six months in space on the international space station. what's the coolest thing you saw? >> i would have spent more if i could. i loved it up there. really, one of the best things was waking up every morning and i -- people always want to know how we sleep. i brought a sleeping bag. >> gio: this is the sleeping bag. >> that's the sleeping bag. i would wake up in this. some people pin it to the wall but i would have mine just floating around. i'd zip myself into it and actually zip my knees up so i could just be a little ball and i would wake up somewhere in my cabin. >> gio: you talk about in the book that you wouldn't know where you would end up. >> i loved that.

it reminded me i'm still here and it's this amazing place where you open the door of the cabin and you fly through the lab and hook a right to look out the window, maybe use the bathroom which i actually talk about in the book too. i mean, people -- >> gio: everybody wonders. >> and it's real stuff and people love to hear it, i think. >> gio: representation for you, you talk about it in the book. it is so important because it's played a role in your life. >> well, i like to -- i met sally ride when i was in college, and it changed -- i just thought -- i never thought this before. i thought maybe i could try to do that. and that's why i put the cover on the book that it has. i wanted to invite people to realize they could be almost anything. and in my experience it works. i mean, i have had people come up to me and say, i saw you in elementary school and now i'm an aerospace engineer. >> gio: wow. >> more than one. it gives me chills to talk about it. the reason it's important, all of us can do that. all of us have the ability to change the next generation by

>> i love these. setting the mood with lighting is so important on the inside of your space, but outside as well. we have string lights here, first of all. everybody loves these. they're cute and set the ambience. if you hang them up eight to ten feet above the ground, it gives you a nice peripheral vision. next, we have citronella candles. bugs are one thing not invited to our party and these are great for keeping mosquitoes at bay. >> janai: they smell great. >> recommend putting them around your space to create a barrier so no bulges are getting in and finally make sure you're cleaning off light fixtures. they've been sitting out all winter so giving them a quick clean or swapping out bulbs. we love a warm white or soft yellow. >> janai: eight to ten feet around your space. >> exactly. >> janai: i love these details. >> all in the details. >> janai: how about getting that perfect patio look? >> yeah, so our big tip for the patio is really bring in pops of color.

good morning, i'm stephanie sierra. we have new details about the pacifica pier this morning. access will be limited indefinitely because of safety concerns. we're looking live at the pier thanks to photographer david chamberlain. structural engineers determined the pier suffered damage last december from high tides during ongoing construction. access will be limited to a portion of the pier's main deck areas of the piles and handrails will need to be repaired. some funding is still needed for this project as well, and there's no word on a reopening date. well, you can celebrate the 4th of july, but not with a drink in your hand. that's the case at three of lake tahoe's most popular beaches. police will be enforcing the u.s. forest service's ban on alcohol at nevada beach and zephyr cove resort. officials have banned alcohol consumption
