Wilson Day
Wilson Day is an annual community service day for
incoming and returning U of R students. Wilson Day
began 23 years ago and is has become an Orientation
tradition. The University sends more than 1,000
volunteers to around 70 different community service
sites in the city and suburbs of Rochester. Students
perform all sorts of tasks around the city from
landscaping, painting houses, and helping at food
banks, to volunteering at nursing homes and schools.
Wilson Day also allows new students to bond with each
other while getting to know the local community. The
day is an excellent way for freshmen to give to their new
community, while getting something back from it too.

information about running their organizations. The conference
began with an expo of 30 vendors and university departments
that work with organizations during the year. Following the
Expo, student leaders were given 30 options of breakout
sessions to attend. SA President Bradley Halpern also spoke
to student groups about the SA Government and its resources.
At the end of the day, many students left the conference ready
to begin another successful year with their organizations.

Rememberance
On the tenth anniversary of 9/11 numerous activities,
lectures, and services were held all over campus to bring
students, faculty, and members of the community together.
A wall surrounding Dandelion Square was erected for students
to share their thoughts, and members of the community held
vigil. The University truly united on this day, providing all with
the opportunity to share their thoughts and memories and find
their own personal call of remembrance.

Meliora Weekend is a weekend of celebration.
Founded in 2001 following the successful

brings graduates, families and students together.
A wide range of programs take place annually,
however this year was also a time of new tradition
and excitement-President Bill Clinton as this year's
keynote speaker as well as a large celebration to kick
off to the "Meliora" campaign in the Palestra. The
University was bustling, filled with smiling faces, a
plethora of activities, and not a parking space to

provides them with the necessary means and resources that are required for concrete action. Their
fundamental goal is empowerment: they serve as a vehicle for activists pursuing a wide range of
social causes - including social justice, anti-war, women's rights, and environmental protection. In
the last few years, SOS has collaborated with the student power movement, the women's movement

Hockey Coaches Association's 2011 All-America Team: Allison Beardsley,
as a Second Team All-American and Anna Dobrzynski as a Third Team
All-American. As only the fourth and fifth field hockey All-Americans in school
history, the ladies, both as individuals and a group, brought pride and honor
to the program with their success nationally and with a winning season.

By drawing support from each other as well as
their head coach Ladi lya, the University's Women's
Volleyball team exhibited a dominating performance
at the net throughout the year. Defeating many
strong teams along the way, including New York
University in the fifth place match of the University
Athletic Association championships, the ladies
succeeded in coming out on top. The NY Regional
Volleyball Challenge brought more success for the
team, finishing the tournament with a perfect 4-0
record, beating both Brockport and St. Lawrence.
Aside from tournament affairs, the ladies hosted
Dig Pink, an annual charity event, and Senior Night
for the team's two seniors: Casey Larson and
Katie Kao in a match against St. Lawrence
University in the Palestra.

Basketball
Men's Varsity
The U of R Men's Basketball team
is quickly becoming one of the top sports
programs at the school. After ending last
season on a successful note, the players
came back ready to face this season's new
challenges. The Yellowjackets were the
champions of the Chuck Resler Memorial
Tournament. The 'Jackets then won the
UR/Holiday Inn Airport Invitational soon after.
At the Wendy's Classic, good team work and
excellent ball skills landed the UR team in
3rd place. The Yellowjackets have won a
streak of home games against UAA League
schools, proving the Yellowjackets are
to be teared on the court. Junior John
DiBartolomeo, a guard, scored his 1,000th
career point as a Junior. Under the leadership
of Head Coach Luke Flockerzi, the team has
perfected its skills and is looking finish the
season even better then it started.

This season's Women's Basketball team is one of the best
performing teams in recent Rochester athletics history. Having
only lost one of their eighteen games thus far, these ladies can
be summarized in one word: fierce. They have won the Chuck
Resler Tournament, the Wendy's Classic, and nearly every
game since! With excellent recruiting and coaching from Head
Coach Jim Scheible, the girls have improved all their skills and
have outperformed all their competitors. This season, they are
ranked fifth on d3hoops.com and are at the top of the UAA
League. With high scorers like Jodie Luther, Jackie Walker,
and Danielle McNabb, these Yellowjackets are averaging
seventy points per game. After this successful season, next
season is sure to be even more exciting and more eventful as
the group of girls grows into a top Division Ill Basketball team.

Rochester's Men's Swimming and Diving team took the competition head
on this season. With many notable wins, the Yellowjackets succeeded in
breaking many records, winning many championships, and holding many titles,
most notably earning the national ranking of 21st in the Top 25 Division Ill poll.
This year, the team worked hard to accomplish many goals and exceed
expectations, both individually and as a collective - Junior Elliott Lasher broke
the Rochester record on the 1-Meter board in a key victory over Nazareth
College, and as a whole, the 'Jackets won the Liberty League team
championships at RPI in December.

Led by Coach Peter Thompson, the women's team worked
wonders this 2011 season. With the class of 2012 providing
great depth in numbers for a variety of events, the team stole
many notable wins, titles, and awards, including being ranked
20th in the Top 5 Division Ill polls. Two juniors, Sara Spielman
and Megan Braun were named Co-Women's Divers of the Year
for the Liberty League Championships as well as Co-Divers of
the Week honors from the University Athletic Association.
Spielman also broke the Rochester school record on the
3-Meter diving board, hitting the provisional NCAA Dive Score.
The lady Yellowjackets, over the course of the season,
continued to make a big splash at the University, breaking many
Liberty League records and bringing many fans to the poolside.

The Yellowjackets had an incredible winter track and field season this
year. The team was lead by a group of talented seniors who didn't disappoint.
After a successful season overall several men went on to compete at the state
meet at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. Senior Ryan Miller placed fifth in the
pole vault, senior Pat Single placed 9th in the shot-put and senior James Vavra
placed first in the 5k run (with sophom*ore Adam Pacheck not tar behind).
However, the Yellowjacket's season didn't end there. Several members of the
team continued on to compete at the ECACs (Eastern College Athletic
Conference) which were held at the NYC Armory the first weekend in March.
The team did extremely well, scoring several points and individually several
people achieving personal bests and personal records. Notably, Jon
Richardson participated in the heptathlon which was held tor the first time this
year (in previous years it was solely a pentathlon) - he tied tor third place at
ECACs.

Success wasn't limited to the men's track and field team this winter.
The women's team also excelled, setting venue records and individual
having multiple personal records. Similar to the men, the women had an
outstanding performance at the state meet at Hamilton College. In the
500m race, Sophom*ore Becky Galasso set a Bundy Field House record
(now: 1 :17.42) - one that hadn't been broken for 13 years. Galasso and
several other teammates continued on to compete in the ECAC meet.
At the ECAC meet in NYC Galasso placed first in the 500m race,
beating her previous time of 1 :17.42. The Yellowjackets placed 25th
overall (there were 57 teams total) and are looking forward to
continuing their success in the Spring season.

After ending the fall season with an 8-1 win over St. John Fisher, UR Men's
tennis was ready for another successful year. Led by head coach Matt Nielson
and a strong senior class, the team held all the aces, challenging many strong
competitors. In the SLU Fall Classic at St. Lawrence University, two University
players, Boris Borovcanin and Alex Magill, battled their way into the semifinals
of the A Flight and B Flight singles, and Borovcanin and Brian Rice rose to the
semifinals of the A Flight doubles in the same competition. In other matches,
the team, both as individuals and doubles, exceeded all expectations and
competed well against top divisional rivals in the Spring season.

Beginning the fall season with many tournaments bode
well for UR Women's tennis and prepared them well for tough
competition in the spring. At the Bowdoin women's tennis
invitational, Junior Frances Tseng won the #1 single's flight,
and UR doubles teams succeeded as well. Further into the
season, the ladies met more success at the Hosking Invite,
where many individual successes prevailed. In the spring,
the ladies benefited from their three leading seniors and
four freshmen additions in matches against many division
challengers, including Ithaca, NYU and St. Lawrence.

Squash Men's Varsity
Men's Squash is the only
Division 1 sports team at the
University of Rochester. This
season was an exciting series of
events for team - including a win
over Yale which landed the
Yellowjackets the fifth place spot
at the Potter's Cup Tournament
(College Squash's National
Championship). Several players
also continued to play in the
College Squash Association's
Individual Championships where
Senior Beni Fischer placed first in
the consolation bracket (ending the
championships with a 4-1 record).

The members of the women's
rowing team wake up each day before
the sun rises and face the brutal
Rochester winds, it is this hard work
and dedication that has caused the
Yellowjackets to have such a
successful start to the season. The
women placed in the top ten in five out
of six events at the Schuylkill meet in
Pennsylvania, and those results don't
encompass the whole team seeing as
the first varsity 8 couldn't race due to
weather conditions. The women's
rowing team is excited to see what the
Spring season has in store.

The Men's Golf team has been improving every year

the season swinging well, placing second in their first three
competitions, the Hamilton Quadrangular, the Tim Brown
Invitational, and the Guy Kahn Invitational. At the Liberty
League Championships, the golfers placed third against tough
competition. Their final competition of the fall season at the
Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic hinted towards a successful
spring season, where they placed seventh against difficult
teams. Kevin Connell tied for 25th place. In late March and
April, the team will play in the UAA Championships, the
Fred Kavetz Invitational, and a handful of other competitions.
They are preparing to jump back into the spring season

Under the direction of Head Coach Scott Greene and a handful of
assistant coached, the Rochester Football team dove into the season head on.
After intensive summer and pre-season training and 19 new freshmen players,
the team was ready to hit the field. The Yellowjackets started the season strong
with a 17-7 win over Case Western Reserve University. After a disappointing
loss to Rochester city rival, St. John Fisher College at the Courage Bowl, the
players came back for a nice win over the United States Merchant Marine
Academy. Although the team ended with a season record of 4-5, they are still
working hard to improve every day on and off the field. The players are active
participants in the University and local communities, assisting in charity benefits
and participating in events. The Yellowjackets are staying in shape and
training so that next year they'll be even more successful.

Led by head coach Margaret
Yerdon-Grange and a full-bodied and
able staff of assistant coaches,
Rochester's Softball proved their
smarts both on and off the field this
season, earning several wins in both
fields. Individual players such as Sara
Hutchinson received the 2011 Lysle
"Spike" Garnish Award for her hard
work both in the classroom and on the
mound. Eight other ladies were named
to the 2011 NFCA All-America ScholarAthlete team by the National Fastpitch
Coaches Association. Three players a freshman and two juniors - also
earned All-Region honors in softball as
announced by the National Fastpitch
Coaches Association.
In addition to these outstanding
individual achievements, the team itself
earned the NFCA's Team Academic
Award for cumulative grade point
average. With numerous wins against
many regional teams in addition to
these successes, this season proved
especially triumphant for the ladies.

This academic year began with many
changes-renovations to dining facilities, new programs,
and a variety of class options. However, this year also
brought with it a newly developed mission statement:
"Learn, Discover, Heal, Create-And Make the World
Ever Better." After a sixteenth month process, Provost
Ralph Kuncl, with Associate Provost Kathleen Moore,
created and oversaw the statement's development.
Complimenting the University's "Meliora" motto, the new
mission statement embodies the purposes and values
that this university has upheld for generations of
students and alumni.

It's 2 a.m. on a Tuesday. Starbucks is
closed and you're just itching for some
pick-me-up to get through the last three pages of
your paper. What used to be a frequent dilemma
for UR students exists no longer, thanks to the
new renovations of Hillside Market, a twenty-four
hour, around the clock option for those late
night snacks.
Hillside, or P.O.D (Provisions on Demand),
was renovated this past summer to include a
variety of new options on campus. Offering a
plethora of hot and cold options for on-the-go
dinners and late night snacks, including a wider
variety of cafe and allergy-sensitive foods along
with a number of local produce options, the
POD is attracting a number of students. Day
and night, all day every day, the new Hillside
is a big hit of the 2011-2012 year.

Danforth Dining
Center Renovation
Danforth, a popular dining
facility located on the hill in Susan
B. Anthony Hall, took on a new
look this summer. Opening on
the twenty-second of August after
extensive renovations, Danforth
shocked everyone not only with
its modern, sleek appearance
and extensive menu, but also
its eco-friendly stance. Furniture
made of recycled Coca Cola
bottles, the utilization of natural
light, manual lighting controls,
and compost system all contribute
to a new Green initiative. The
renovations also allow for visible
cooking stations and open seating,
emphasizing a new transparency
to university dining.

In early September 2011 construction began tor a new
dormitory on the River Campus. The new residence hall is
expected to be completed and ready tor students to move
in next September 2012. The new dorm is being built to
accommodate tor the growing enrollment at the University.
This is the first River Campus dorm to be built in 42 years.
The new dorm is located next to Wilder and Anderson
Towers on Wilson Boulevard where there had been a small
parking lot. The new residence hall will be five stories, 52,00
square-feet, and is expected to hold about 150 students.
The new building caters to sophom*ores, juniors, and seniors
with singles, doubles, and adjoining doubles. It will also
otter extras, such as indoor bike parking and added study
rooms and lounges. The dorm is being constructed to
meet LEED gold certification standards to reduce negative
environmental impacts and improve energy performance. There will be, tor example, a high recycling content tor
construction materials and a rain garden to tilter and clean water before it heads to the storm system.
The University hopes to create a new quad design with the completion of this building. The Sage Arts Center, Anderson
and Wilder Towers, and the new building, clustered together in Founders Court, will encircle a newly landscape quadrangle,
which will have a new outdoor fireplace. There are long term plans to reorient the entrances to the older tower residences
and position them to flow better into the newly designed quad. University President Joel Seligman said, "The College is truly
on the movie. Its student body continues to grow in both quality and size. This new residence hall, the first on the River
Campus in more than 40 years, is a symbol of that dynamic growth."

In early fall, a Solar Dok, a self-sustaining solar powered
charging station, was installed outside of Meliora Hall close
to Rush Rhees Library. The Solar Dok houses four standard
electrical outlets, two USB outlets, and an LED lighting system
for nighttime use. EnerFusion, Inc. designed and fabricated
the Solar Dok. The panels on the Solar Dok take the power of
the sun and convert it into usable energy capable of powering
devices during the day and night. The Solar Dok gives the
campus community the opportunity to charge laptops, cell
phones, and other electronics with green energy. The plastic
components of the table are made from various recycled
materials and the structural parts of the table are made from
aluminum, a non-toxic and recyclable material. The Solar Dok
can be used at night because of the LED lights under the
umbrella-like panels. These LED lights use about 8-percent
less energy than regular incandescent lightbulbs.
With the addition of the Solar Dok, the University is
joining a number of other schools promoting sustainability and
the use of alternative power sources, such as the University of
Florida and the University of Central Florida. Although the
bench will not be usable year round (due to Rochester
weather), it is still an extra step towards sustainability.

The YellowJackets, the University's oldest male
a capella group, was selected to compete and perform
on NBC's 3rd season of The Sing Off. The series

The YellowJackets are a group of 15
undergraduates from both the U of R and Eastman
School of Music. The group competed against 15 of
the country's best a capella groups to win over celebrity
judges Ben Folds of Ben Folds Five, Shawn Stockman
of Boyz II Men, and solo artist Sara Bareilles for the
ultimate prize of a Sony Music recording contract and a
$200,000 cash prize. Although the YellowJackets were
eliminated on October 31 in the 7th episode, they still
had an amazing run. They sang recent pop songs such
as "Wavin' Flag" by K'naan and "Dynamite" by Taio
Cruz to classics such as "Can't Take My Eyes Off You"
by Frankie Valli. On the day of their elimination the
group thanked the Rochester community and all their
fans via a post on their Facebook page. The University
is equally proud of the YellowJackets achievements.

Congratulations, Alexl
You made it to the moon, my Alex. You have a strength and gift that
makes everyone who knows you a better person. Now enjoy the ride
every single day for the rest of your life. You are my hero and my
shining star. I love you the same ... Mom
There is no way for me to tell you how proud I continue to be of you.
I have learned so much from having you as my little brother, and if I
have given you even half as much back to you over the years, then
I have done my job as your big. I know that you will find excellence
and success with everything and anything that you choose to pursue
and the world will have to brace itself for the next chapter in the life
of Al Bob. As you move forward towards all that awaits you,
remember that your happiness is all that matters at the end of the
day and is the way that true success is measured. As you explore
what this next step has in store, you will never have to look back
far to see us all right behind you, watching on with pride
and amazement as we have been all along.
Love, Mike
I love you Al. I am so proud of you and can not
believe how quickly you have grown up. You
are the strongest person I know in every way.
Keep being you and you'll go far.
Love, Brandon
